This activity is aimed at beginning readers and helps them to learn the basics of reading/writing:
What is a letter? What is a word? What is a sentence? What is a picture?
- 7 sorting mats with different coloured caterpillars
- 1 black and white sorting mat
- 3 sheets with boxes of letters, words, sentences and pictures for sorting.
To use the activity, print out the ‘Sort It’ sheet and individual letters, words, sentences and pictures. I find it works better if the ‘Sort It’ mats are enlarged to A3. It is better to laminate them for multiple use.
Cut out the individual boxes. The student/s then sort them into the correct groups. I like to do it as a whole class activity first.
You might also like to enlarge the boxes to A3 and use them to play ‘Memory’ or ‘Snap’.
