This pack of 10 stories has been made after realising how many students that struggle with their reading during intervention, that didn’t want to read the babyish ones (or what they referred to them as). Now they look forward to learning about new things or extending their knowledge in some areas. I try to find an interest for them and then research and write in my own words the information I can put into a story, that they can engage in. I ensure I add some challenging words relevant to the text that can be their (peer level) words they can then use in language.
Print, copy or laminate these. I have created an activity focused on the trickier (sight) familiar words students need to know, where after reading they search the text and highlight with the relevant colours to the words in the boxes.
The tricky word box is there for teachers to use as a discussion tool before reading. Discuss the words and what they mean etc, so they aren’t so tricky when they read them.
